'Consciousness' is a state of our awareness of the sensations, thoughts, and other internal processes. We all react to different aspects of our life. From the physical space around us to the sub-conscious state within us. Do we question why one chair is more comfortable than the other, why do you prefer to your coffee in a particular cup, why do you like a particular coffee shop, why do like a particular spoon and not the other one…………….the list is endless. Small things around us define us. And eventually we define the things we like…………. somewhere along we define who we are. Design is a sub-conscious reaction to produce a solution to a problem. The problem can be in any form and shape. Sometimes it is need based, sometimes it is solution based. Like the solar powered battery chargers in Africa_ these chargers are used for charging mobile phones as there is no electricity. However, what we aim is produce solution based design. Question the needs and requirements; fill in the gaps in our daily lives for holistic solutions. The aim is create awareness about design and us. Design is not an exclusive domain. Design should not be an elitist term. Design should be a part of our everyday lives. Design should be common place. Design should be aid to transform us and around us to efficient and effective in all we do. Design is not how many numbers have been sold but about how many people use it. How many people have benefitted from it? If it is product, it is design consciousness which will prevent sub-standard products coming into the market. It will save the consumer money, it will reduce our garbage dumps, and it will create connectivity with the product. Feel, understand and care for everything we use. It our consciousness which will transform things around us, it will transform the way we live…….and may be have far reaching impact of creating simpler lives. If it is space design, it will simply impact the way we react. More and more of the human population is migrating towards urban, man-made environments, so it is very important for the betterment of the human living conditions that we are conscious of our built-environment. Every space needs to be designed for its need and requirement. Keep the human appeal. Being design conscious will allow each of us to question and create better places where we work, play and live.
